Real-Time Presence Without Stalkerware

Typing indicators and read receipts are powerful — and potentially anxiety-inducing. Gettit’s approach:

Typing indicators are real-time but not persistent — they disappear when someone stops typing, not when they stop responding
Read receipts respect the user’s privacy settings — if a user has hidden read receipts, the UI respects that server-side
Online status in chat headers is controlled by the same privacy settings as the grid — if you’re set to “appear offline,” you appear offline in chat too

Dual-Layer Real-Time Architecture

The messaging system uses our secure end-to-end chat system for message delivery, storage, and real-time events, with real-time database for supplemental presence signals.
